Frances Pickering

May 8 + 9 Thursday and Friday      Black and White Editions

10am to 4pm    Fee £75  Deposit £40

We will be using shades of black and white to make fabric books based around the theme of poets or prose and poetry. [You can use a different theme if you wish]

We will use a variety of techniques and materials to make striking stitched surfaces using plain and printed fabrics.

You can use these to make a book, or a piece of artwork. You might also choose to fill a sketchbook with your ideas, samples and experiments.

Frances Pickering

May 13 - 16 Tuesday to Friday      Black and White Editions

10am to 4pm     Fee £140  Deposit £80

This four day course is based on the same topic as the two day one.

The additional two days will allow us to take time over our designs and enable Frances to spend more time helping students to develop, and enhance their own creative ideas.

We can continue to fill our sketchbook, stitch into our pages and enrich our Black and White Editions. We found this an invaluable resource in 2013.

If you prefer to  spread your work over two weeks it may be possible to book for two days in week one and two in week two. Let us know and we will see if we have the space available. Frances is an amazing artist whose work it is a joy to see.

 Lynda Monk

July 17 + 18 Thursday and Friday            Encrusted Blade

10am to 4pm    Fee £85  Deposit £40

In this workshop we will use Kunin felt to create a textured surface which will then be used to construct an Encrusted Blade, the vessel shown in the picture. The vessel can be opened to reveal a hidden treasure, or a mini 'blade'.

Once our vessel has been created we will add colour and more texture to the surface.

During the two days Lynda will be using numerous techniques to enhance the vessel, including the use of thermofax screens. We will also have the opportunity to explore other techniques as samples for further work.

The techniques learned lend themselves to all sorts of other types of vessels. The initial work on the felt will entail the use of a sewing machine to prepare the surface, either in straight or free machining.

Lynda supplies all of the materials required to complete the vessel with a kit for each student, with the exception of the sewing machine and threads. We are also given a CD with full instructions so there is no need to even take notes.

Kit fee £12 each payable on the course

If you were at Westpoint in September 2013, or at one of the other big shows around the country, you may have seen some of Lynda's very exciting work.

 Pauline Verrinder

August 18 + 19 Monday and Tuesday        All Wired Up

10am to 4pm       Fee £85  Deposit £40

In this workshop we will use free machine embroidery techniques, mixed media, wire, thread , and fabric.

The course will revolve around the use of cotton covered wire for constructional purposes. Initially wire will be, either painted, or decorated, and then embellished with machine embroidery.

The construction of various forms will be performed by both hand and machine embroidery techniques enabling the creation of items as large as vessels or as small as jewellery.

Explore the endless possibilities that working with wire presents when using it to create delicate 3D shapes. Petals, pods, leaves and items for jewellery are just some forms that can be constructed.

Some experience of free machine embroidery is necessary.

Pauline will bring some of the materials required for the course at a charge of £10 each.
